Shining Force Gaiden - Polished Conflict (ROM hack)
|
My in-progress graphics ROM hack for Shining Force Gaiden - Final Conflict, aiming to revamp the graphics of the whole game. Gameplay remains unchanged. The original game never got released outside of Japan, but the current version of this patch should be compatible with the English translation patch by Shining Force Central. |
Navigation
List of Changes:
- All map sprites have been changed, making them closer to the characters' official art and/or battle sprites;
- A few cutscene effects have also been redrawn;
- Galam castle's tileset has been slightly tweaked.
How to patch a ROM:
Use an IPS patcher like like this online one. Select the patch downloaded here as your patch file. Your ROM file must be either an unmodified ROM of Shining Force Gaiden - Final Conflict, or one with only the English translation patch already applied.
Highly recommended that you keep a copy of the original ROM, always. First rule of ROM hacking is to backup everything.
Known issues:
- Mead and Sylvia use the same set of map sprites before and after promotion. I ran out of space in their memory block. The byte economy is harsh and unforgiving;
- For the same reasons mentioned above, the Vampire Bat and Huge Bat enemies have the same map sprite;
- When hidden enemies pop up, sometimes they show the wrong sprite for a moment. I believe this is a bug from the original game, but it feels more noticeable with new sprites so I'm mentioning it here. It fixes itself up in a few seconds so it's just minor weirdness.
- I tested very little of the compatibility with the English patch, don't be too surprised if something bad happens.
Special Thanks:
None of this would have been possible without the almost 20 years old notes and codes about this game's compression archived on Romhacking.net. Please strive to document and archive your work no matter how small, you never know what might come out of it in the future.
Please contact me here or at Tumblr (@claire-starsword or @starswordartblog) if you have any questions/comments/bug reports, and most important of all, have fun.

To-do List for Future Versions
- Replace battle sprites. I have a few already done and you have no idea how much I long to see them in action, I also already know where they are located in the ROM. Might run into space issues on the way though;
- I don't have specific tweaks for maps/tilesets in mind but I want to find and rip them from the ROM to decide for certain what to change or not;
- Same as above for character portraits.
Super Ambitious Extra Goal likely to not happen
Once all the graphical goals above get achieved, I would like to try my own take on a translation of this game, and also see how viable it would be to add spell icons and such things in the UI. I know nothing on how the UI is coded though, and it would be a lot of work, so I'm unsure if it will ever happen.
